STARAN

Garden Care and Support Service

Staran Volunteers

The Staran Garden and Amenity project was set up in 1990 by the Lewis Council of Social Service (now Voluntary Action Lewis) with the objective of assisting elderly and disabled people maintain their gardens.

STARAN is being re-organised as a social enterprise by Voluntary Action Lewis.

This means it is still our intention to offer a garden care and support service to the community, but we hope to improve, expand and develop that service as well as increase employment and training opportunities at the same time. We are going to offer our customers the following service, referred to in the customer request section.

The new service can do one off jobs or do work for our customers weekly, fortnightly or three weekly depending on what you want.

Our Membership Scheme

We hope to continue to provide a service to elderly and disabled people but in the new scheme we welcome new customers. Priority will however be given to our Green Gardening Club Members and customers who book a season’s work.

Our Green Gardening Club Members

This is open to social landlord tenants (Council or Hebridean Housing Partnership tenants) who are referred for support and who want a seasonal service.

Costs

Green Gardening Club tenants, mainly elderly and disabled people, will have a discounted rate of £10 per hour based on an average of 1 hour per garden (Subject to agreement with their landlords).

Others will be £15 per hour based on an average 1 hour per garden.

Trust.

Our Gift Aid Scheme

We are proposing to offer a STARAN Care Gift Aid Voucher to enable family friends and others to give STARAN’s services to someone they care about.

This can be for birthdays, mother’s day or any day and will be available in various values and combinations to enable customer costs to be discounted or paid for in total.

Gift Aid Vouchers can also be purchased by Community Councils or other agencies to help provide support to other particular individuals. They will only be redeemable by STARAN.
